Ebook About One of the last residents of the Smoky Mountain town frozen in time tells of life in a community that few have seen. The remote Smoky Mountain community of Cades Cove still lives in the memory of J.C. McCaulley, one of the few remaining former residents, who offers an exclusive glimpse into a childhood in the Cove. His stories, compiled by his wife Margaret, are a testament to a way of life long abandoned - a life before automobiles, television and perhaps too much exposure to the outside world; a life of hard work and caring for your neighbors. Join the McCaulleys in their quest to preserve the beauty, tranquility and traditions of this pristine community, and dare to dream of a way of life that encouraged independence, integrity and the courage to overcome adversity.Book A Cades Cove Childhood (American Heritage) Review :
I am glad I bought this slim book, which tells the story of growing up in the Great Smokey Mountains from the 1920s to the 1940s. The writing is clear and easily readable, the storyline itself talks about a long-lost American rural culture The place where the author grew up was purchased by the American government in the 1930s, causing everyone in the immediate region to relocate elsewhere--apparently it killed some of them to move. We need more slim-book stories told by common folk to counteract our obsession with celebrities here in America. The real America is populated by thousands of people like this author and I think we need to celebrate not just the long heritage of the mountainfolk in the Smokey Mountains, but in many parts of the U.S. I like everything I can get my hands on that relates the history of Cades Cove. Loved reading it from a resident's point of view.
